Waves Sibilance for guitar squeak removal
1.jpg

When recording clean or acoustic guitars there is sometimes the unavoidable issue of the strings squeaking. Sometimes it can add to the performance and vibe but more often than not it is a distraction from the song or music.

Removing these harsh sounds can be done via automating the volume or sometimes with EQ. Another trick is to use a de-esser; I have many de-essers in my plugin list but none of them can reduce the squeaks from guitar recordings as well as Sibilance can from Waves, especially on acoustic guitars!

The only placement you'll ever need to mic a guitar cabinet

This is one of the biggest mistakes that people are still making when then send me tracks to mix. Not properly placing their microphones on their guitar cabinets! I get so many tracks to mix with guitar mics that sound dull and lifeless.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best option! This is the only guitar cabinet mic placement you will ever need and it only uses 2 microphones! Here is how it works:

1. Place one microphone on the edge of the speaker CAP

2. Place the other microphone on the edge of the speakers CONE

The first microphone position is a favourite amongst producers and engineers and gives a bright tone. The second mic which is placed further off to the edge of the cone is much darker and has a bit more weight.

The beauty of this technique is that you can blend the two microphones in your mix to create a well balanced but rich guitar tone. You can even use them as a sort of EQ, if you need more brightness you would reduce the volume of the second microphone and vice versa, to get a darker more vintage tone you would reduce the volume of the first microphone.

Pro tips:

- Place the microphones directly on the grill cloth or 1-2 cms away.

- If you use 2 microphones that are the same all you will need to do is make sure they are the same distance from the grill cloth and they will be in phase!

- If you use 2 different microphones you will need to make sure that you phase align them correctly.

I love octave pedals....
Guitars.jpg

As much as I love overdrive and distortion pedals, the pedals that really get me salivating are creative ones. If you have heard any of my productions you probably already know that I'm an octave pedal addict!! Nothing sounds better on a heavy riff than a filthy octave pedal, the @ehx POG2 or Microsynth are my favourites 🎸

But... The POG2 can do a whole lot more than just heavy riffs. I love to use this octave pedal to create swelling and sweeping pad textures that add depth and ambience to any chorus. Use the attack knob set to the dry and octave signals, play chords, root notes or lead melodies, add a ton of delay and reverb and boom you have an enormous pad for your chorus!

Who else loves octave pedals?

This is a perfect reproduction of Darkglass Electronics incredible Microtubes bass pedal. The best part about this plugin is the cabinet emulation section, it sounds incredible! It's not only for heavier music I've used it on many tracks from multiple genres.

Bass (Post) DI
BassDI

So you probably already record the direct (DI) signal from your bass guitar but have you tried recording the direct signal after all of your pedals? or even after your amp head?

In my productions, this is the most useful signal for me to record especially with heavier music or music with a lot of synth elements. A speaker on a bass amplifier rolls off at around 4kHz so by using a direct (DI) signal after the pedals you can bring back some of the higher frequencies that the speaker can't reproduce. Some pedals sound crazy good with just a DI!

My normal bass track setup looks something like this:

- Bass Pre DI
- Bass Post DI
- Bass Amp Mic A (Audix D6 or AKG D112)
- Bass Amp Mic B (Shure SM57 or similar)
- Bass Sans Amp

All these tracks are blended in parallel to create the perfect tone!

Bass setups don't get better than this.....

Bass setups don't get better than this!

This setup is from @danbassely of @roryindiana. It's a rare occurrence that the bassist is more of a gear head than the guitarists but that's exactly what Dan is! He brought 4 basses to last years recording session along with a Mesa Boogie bass rig! It sounded so good!!

What's your favourite bass amp for recording?

I had the pleasure of engineering MEAT, the second EP from @idlesband. It was produced by my good friend @spacemusicproducer. We recorded all of the live instruments at Moles Recording Studio in Bath, with the recording of the lead vocals here at @decimalstudios.

Great record, great band!

How to tune drums to notes
How to tune drums to notes

🥁 Tuning drums to notes is much easier than people think! Here's how I do it....

1. Calculate the fundamental frequency of your desired note.
2. Multiply the fundamental frequency by 1.75. (i.e. B2: 123.47Hz*1.75 = 216.07Hz)
3. Playback the resulting frequency (216Hz) using a signal generator.
4. Tune each lug on both the batter and the reso heads to the frequency (216Hz).

Pro Tips:

- Use studio or o-rings to remove the overtones for easier tuning.
- You can use a signal generator on your DAW or via an app on iOS or Android.
- When tuning, make sure you can hear the signal generator and the note from the skin in equal measure. When you get close to being in tune you should hear the two notes oscillating, much like tuning guitar strings, when this oscillation equalises, boom, you are in tune!

Sounds easy enough right? Who's going to try this next time they tune their drums? Let me know in the comments!

Hi, My name is Chris
ChrisCoulter

Hi 👋, My name is Chris. I'm a music producer and engineer and I own Decimal Studios

I've been producing music professionally for over twelve years. In that time I have worked on over 350 releases, from small unsigned solo artists to major label Classical Brit and Ivor Novello award winners. Music is my passion, there is nothing more satisfying than the creation of music in and out of the studio.

I first started recording music back in my final year at school. I found an old 4 track tape recorder in a cupboard in the music room and ended up recording everyone's GCSE music pieces. During school, I was in a band and I became frustrated with the recording process in the local studios. The engineers simply didn’t care enough and it showed in their productions. I felt like the engineers were holding us back so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I took a course at The Academy Of Contemporary Music and went onto get a BA(Hons) Degree in Music Technology at Thames Valley University. Armed with this I landed a job at Stakeout Studios where I was resident for 3 years. I left to start my own mobile recording company which now has permanent residence in Stakeout Studios ‘B’ Room, known as Decimal Studios.

I know what it’s like to work in the studio where the engineer lacks in skills and is more interested in their watch than the song. That's why I put absolutely everything into every single one of my productions and I put every effort into bringing the artist's creative vision to life.

Recording and creating music every day is a dream and I’m lucky enough to call it my profession. 😍

Mac OS Sierra Final Release and Pro Tools HD 12.5.2

I signed up to the beta program for the new Apple Mac OS Sierra 10.12 a while ago and installed the operating system on my laptop as I was curious to see if it would fix the infamous GUI bug that has been plaguing Pro Tools on Yosemite and El Capitan. If you aren't aware of the issue; Apple tweaked something in those operating systems to restrict the frame rate, something blah blah and it has been affecting many pieces of software not just Pro Tools. To my joy, Mac OS Sierra in its Beta state, had fixed the GUI bug! This morning I received an email notification from Apple for the Final Release version of the operating system and I thought that I would take the plunge and install it on my main studio Mac to see what it would break! So on with the install.......

The install was pretty straight forward as I was just upgrading the OS, I know, I know, always do a clean install! and I normally do but this time I was just testing what, if any, problems the OS has with any of my software or hardware. Below you can see the specs of the mac:

SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS:

Mac Pro Mid 2010
2 x 2.4gHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
14GB 1066MHz DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
2 x 250GB SSD Drives in Raid 0 (Striped)
UAD Quad PCIe
Avid Pro Tools HD Native 12.5.2
Apogee Symphony IO

FIRST TEST - BOOTING PRO TOOLS:

Once the OS had installed and rebooted it was time to check if Pro Tools would actually load, Fingers crossed!

So to my surprise Pro Tools booted without any hiccups, if anything it seemed to boot quicker? That's my general thought about Sierra on the whole, it feels so much more responsive than Yosemite or El Capitan. Feeling great about pro tools actually booting up I decided to load one of my tracking sessions. This also loaded without any problems and I was able to play and edit the track as I would do normally. I previously mentioned the GUI bug had been fixed in the beta version of the OS and it remains fixed in the final release. It's so refreshing to actually watch the meters moving in realtime to the track, simple things eh? Beat detective seems to be working as it once did; previously the progress meter wouldn't update or it would hang. When using beat detective you often create a lot on clips and fades and this used to make pro tools very laggy when scrolling. I can confirm that this is no longer the case but the zoom function, when there are a lot of clips in view, is still very laggy. This must be down to something on Avid's end and not with Apples OS.

I tried my hardest to force Pro Tools crash or fall over but it seems that its pretty stable. I managed to use buffer settings of 32 samples on a session with just under 100 audio tracks at 48kHz 24bit with no issues. Admittedly the CPU was hitting around 70% and I'm sure if I used it long enough it would fall over but it seems very stable at my usual 64 samples. Offline bounce seems to work normally as does committing or freezing tracks. I went through as many plugins as I could possibly bare testing and it seems that all the plugins that I own are working! All except ONE, please see below! Even the Slate Digital plugins appear not to have any new bugs!

SECOND TEST - MIX SESSION:

With my tracking session working fine it was time to take a look at one of my mixing sessions. As soon as I opened it up, UAD hardware not found!

This seems to be the only issue that I have found with my specific system and unfortunately it's a big one! I use UAD powered plugins on all of my mixes because frankly they sound incredible. I know that UAD have been reporting this bug with Sierra since the beta was released but I was kinda hoping that the Final Release would magically fix the issue, because that always happens, right?

Mac OS Sierra isn't officially released for a few more weeks so hopefully that will give UAD enough time to fix the issue and everyone can enjoy Pro Tools without the laggy graphics!

List of Plugins that I have briefly tested and seem to be working OK (I haven't tested advanced items like automation)

Antares Auto-Tune LIVE
Eiosis De-Esser
Brainworx BX Meter
Lexicon LXP Reverbs
Massey DRT
Native Instruments Absynth
Native Instruments Battery
Native Instruments FM8
Native Instruments Kontakt 5
Native Instruments Massive
Native Instruments Reaktor 5
Relab LX480
SSL Duende Native Channel Strip
SSL Duende Native Bus Compressor
Slate Digital Everything Bundle
Slate Trigger 2
SoundToys 5 Complete
Waves (Various Plugins)
VocAlign Project

CONCLUSION

Early signs suggest that this might be the rock solid operating system that we have all been waiting for since OSX Mountain Lion was dropped from software developers supported operating systems. Obviously that could all change in the blink of an eye and it also depends on how long it will take Universal Audio to fix the issue with their UAD cards!

So, if you don't have any UAD hardware, it looks pretty promising! I'm not saying you should upgrade as soon as it comes out but hopefully this will give you a small insight into how Sierra might affect your pro tools system.

As always with these things make sure you create a backup if you decide to upgrade!

10/09/2016 UPDATE:

There have been a few people that have managed to disable the System Integrity Protection (SIP) in order to enable the drivers for their UAD gear. This isn't true in my case. I managed to to disable SIP but it only caused the OS to hang and crash when loading the drivers for the UAD-Quad. It looks like the people that have managed to get this working successfully are using external devices such as the Firewire or Thunderbolt Apollo and UAD Satellite, whereas I am using the PCIe UAD-Quad. If anyone has managed to get their PCIe device working I would love to know!
